💦 Make A Tropical 🧜♀️ Splish Splash 💦
The Mermaid Splash Cocktail – Inspired by a gift I received recently (thank you Abby @squirrelbucket). A gorgeous and very tasty bottle of Gray Whale Gin. I also topped this tipple with sparkling water with real lime, by Spindrift. Since this is looking more and more like my “summer of the mermaid”, I had to conjure up a cocktail to go with both my new favorite gin and soon-to-be launch of my handcrafted soap business.
The new soap biz logo and theme is all about mermaids. Not the misogynistic, sexpot, needs to be rescued, “siren of the sea” kind of mermaid, but the real life (IRL), everyday mermaid. A true ocean slayer and feminist-goddess kind of tailed sea-person 😉.
Whatever you think of mermaids, if you like a tropical tipple from time to time, try this Mermaid Splash Cocktail. It’s quite delightful.
Light and fresh, this Mermaid Splash Cocktail lets the taste of this gin shine through. The drink is oh-so tropical from the coconut and lime, notes of citrus, and slightly floral from the orange flower water. The foam on top resembles the water after a breach from the mermaid’s tail as she descends once again, into the deep.
Take a deep breath, relax and enjoy! Close your eyes for a moment. Believe that you are swimming in the cool waters of the Pacific. You’re completely free and flowing with the tides. Your fishtail is powering you to move at unbelievable speed through the water. You breach the surf and fly through the air, until you flip, mid-air and then dive back down, gracefully breaking through the water, then slapping the surface hard with your fin, as you descend again into the sea. Can you smell the salty air? It’s divine.
Gray Whale Gin 🐋
Inspired by the flavors of the coast from the juniper of Big Sur, sea kelp, almonds and mint of central California down to the plentiful limes from San Diego to Baja, CA.
I’m definitely not an expert, but I have enjoyed my fair share of gin varieties in my time and this one is quite nice. I can say, it’s very good just as it is. A delicious gin for a simple chilled martini served straight up, with a twist and done.
This small batch gin maker, Gray Whale Gin, is putting profits to a good cause. A portion of their proceeds going to Oceana and 1% For The Planet. That’s some “cocktailing” I can get behind! It’s all about the celebration and protection of the Gray Whale.
Spindrift seems a perfect partner for this gin. Sparkling water combined with gin, is sooo, sooo in. This brand has so many real fruit flavors and I can’t tell you how much I love all things ocean themed. What other sparkling water would a mermaid pair with her favorite gin?
My Mermaid Obsession
I’m curious if it’s a Aquarius thing, you know, the water bearer? But I fell in love with the idea of mermaids the first time I read Peter Pan. It was the picture of the mermaids in the lagoon that I found so mesmerizing. Anytime I would see one, from Disneyland’s Small World or Pirates of the Caribbean to so many old movies, I wished I could be one.
Mr. Peabody and The Mermaid with William Powell and Ann Blythe further cinched that childhood wish. Of course, the crowning touch, Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah in Splash. I guess I can’t be the only one obsessed by Mermaids.
For many years I had a framed “Merman” in my living room. It was an original made from shimmering paper and crafted by the artist who was also the brother of a good friend. That picture always kept everyone one talking, that’s for sure.
The Mermaid Splash Cocktail 🧜🏽♀️
Prepare your cocktail glass. This is nicely served in a Collins glass that’s been chilled and filled with crushed ice.
Into a shaker, without any ice, add 2 ounces of Gray Whale Gin with 1 1/2 ounces of unsweetened coconut water and 1/2 ounce each of simple syrup, freshly squeezed lime juice and blue curcacao. Add just about 1 teaspoon of orange flower water and 1 egg white.
Dry shake (without ice) for about 20-30 seconds. The longer you shake, the better the results.
Add 3 or 4 ice cubes and again for another 20 seconds.
Strain into your glass, then top with about 2 ounces of Spindrift Sparkling Water with Real Lime Juice.
Garnish with a flower or lime wheel. Mermaid tails, optional!
