Everything Old Is New Again
Back in the early 2000’s, there was a cocktail that was all the rage. I was reminded of this particular drink just the other day. Recently I was going through my old “keepers”. I used to cut recipes out of magazines and newspapers and paste them into a notebook, can you imagine? Well, I’m certainly giving away my age, right? I’m at least 35. Oh well, I guess I was feeling nostalgic. Anyway, the headline caught my attention: “Porn Star Cocktail”. Seriously, how relevant to 2018, right? You can’t listen to the news or read a paper or article without being reminded of a certain very notorious porn star (no judgement whatsoever is intended, either). I mean, it’s true what they say, eventually everything old becomes new again. I wonder if the “Porn Star Cocktail” is making a comeback now? Well, let’s see if it catches on one more time.
What’s Your Porn Star Name?
This drink also reminded me of the fun we used to have coming up with our porn star name. Have you ever done that? You take the name of your first pet and combine it with the name of the street you grew up on (or at least the one you most remember). Mine is AWESOME! I am Sabrina Addison. I’m sure I would have been a big star with that name. What’s yours?
There are a lot of versions on how to do a Porn Star. I believe I followed the closest version to the original. It was started in 2002 in a bar in London. This is not my first go at a Porn Star.
This Is How You Do A Porn Star
You’ll need either vanilla vodka, or you can make it ahead yourself. Get a few nice, ripe vanilla beans. I actually get them at Costco and they are fantastic. They are fat and fresh. They come sealed in what looks like a little glass test tube. Compared to the prices at specialty and grocery stores, it’s a steal. Check it out, and you’re welcome! Put a few of the beans, split open into the vodka, I’d say whatever amount of flavored vodka you want to make, use a bean per pint. Put the top back on the bottle, give it a shake and store it for about a week.
If you choose this method, you can’t have a Porn Star on a whim, you’ll have to plan it ahead of time. If you must have one and can’t wait, just buy some vanilla vodka, you’ll always find some other delicious drink to make with it. I certainly can help with that!
The other important ingredient is passion fruit. I used fresh passion fruit, but you can use puree. Passion fruit is extremely tart, so you get where I’m going with this, right? You’ll need about 1 ounce of puree or pulp per drink.
You also need regular vodka of your choice, a lime, a cocktail shaker, plenty of ice and champagne. Oh yes, the Porn Star is followed by a shot of champagne (or sparkling wine) or prosecco. Yep, that’s right. The cost of the Porn Star is completely up to you. You can spend a lot or, you could get away rather cheaply. It’s your call!
Put Your Cocktail Together
Open your champagne and pour a shot for each cocktail you’re making. Put a few martini glasses in the freezer to chill. Add a good handful or two of ice to your shaker. For each drink, Add 1 once fresh passion fruit or puree, one ounce vanilla vodka and one ounce of your favorite vodka and a squeeze of lime. Shake the begeebers out of it. You know, the colder the better. Pour into your chilled glass. Take a sip or two and shoot your champagne! There you are, a beautiful cocktail that’s tart and classy! Cheers!
Notes
This is a very tart cocktail. If you like a little less tart, add 1/2 ounce simple syrup or 1/2 ounce pineapple juice.
Ingredients
- 1 ounce vanilla vodka
- 1 ounce vodka
- 1 ounce passion fruit pulp or puree
- lime
- passion fruit for garnish
- champagne or prosecco
Instructions
- Remove pulp from passion fruit - one ounce per cocktail.
- In a shaker filled with ice, add one ounce vanilla vodka, one ounce vodka, one ounce pulp or puree of passion fruit, 1/4 ounce fresh lime juice. Shake well.
- Pour into a chilled martini glass, garnish with slice of fresh passion fruit
- serve with a shot of champagne or prosecco
- This cocktail is very tart. If you'd like it a little sweeter, add 1/2 ounce of simple syrup.
