Tart and Potent – Gold Rush Cocktail

A little known fact about me is that a million years ago, I attended bartender school.  I actually worked part time as a bartender for a very short time at a local bowling alley.   Although I believe I had the personality to be able to work in that very demanding field, I had very little talent!   I completely lacked the ability to move so quickly and remember so many different cocktails.  My career was short-lived, but my enthusiasm for enjoying a delicious adult beverage (or two) has never waned.  I certainly don’t remember making this Gold Rush Cocktail in my day.

I was out with my sister recently and we were waiting for her Sweety-Pie to join us.  We were at a new place in La Canada/Flintridge.  The bartenders and the drinks are fantastic.  A few of the bartenders put on quite a show and really know their craftiest cocktails.   We both ordered the daily cocktail special, “Gold Rush”.   My sister Laura is a fan of very tart cocktails. Well, let me tell you, a Gold Rush is very tart and very delicious.  We enjoyed a few of these that night and if you’re a fan of bourbon and have never tried one, this is a great recipe!

The Gold Rush Cocktail Recipe!

Fill a cocktail shaker 1/3 with ice.  Add 2 ounces of your favorite bourbon and 3/4 ounces of freshly squeezed lemon juice and 3/4 ounces of honey simple syrup.

Shake, shake, shake…at least 20 seconds vigorously!
poor contents directly into a chilled and ice filled double old fashioned glass.  Garnish with fresh lemon and/or fresh herbs (mint, basil, sage or thyme) if used for the syrup.

For the Honey Herb Simple Syrup

Into a small sauce pan over medium low heat, add 1/2 cup honey and 1/2 cup water and 2-3 herb leaves, depending on strength of flavor you like.  This syrup is good with a variety of herbs, such as sage, thyme, basil or mint.  Simmer about 5 minutes, then turn off the heat and let the herbs continue to infuse until the mixture is room temperature.

Let syrup chill completely.  This will keep in a sealed container, refrigerated for a few weeks.

Cheers!
